In Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, the Kidney is the root of congenital essence, storing primordial Yin and primordial Yang; the Spleen is the root of acquired essence, being the source of Qi and blood transformation. The two depend on each other; once Spleen and Kidney are deficient, a person may easily exhibit multiple signs of deficiency: such as feeling both cold and hot, lacking energy during the day and poor sleep at night, sore waist and legs, declining function, and even frequent urination with incontinence. Such conditions often fall under the category of "Yin and Yang deficiency," and regulation cannot focus on only one aspect.

Today, I will introduce a commonly used compatibility strategy in Traditional Chinese Medicine, derived from the formula concept of the traditional empirical formula "Sheng Jing Gu Shen Wan." Unlike strong, heat-generating medications, it has a relatively balanced taste and nature, making it easier for the general public to accept, and it is also more affordable.

This formula includes goji berries and prepared rehmannia root to nourish kidney essence and replenish yin blood; epimedium and rhinohorn caterpillar fungus then warm and tonify kidney yang, strengthen muscles and bones without causing dryness; combined with astragalus, ginseng, white atractylodes, poria, and licorice, the focus is on strengthening the spleen and boosting qi, promoting digestion and absorption, allowing the nutrients taken in to be truly utilized; plus polygala and clematis seeds to help consolidate essence and prevent leakage; finally, a little galangal and ligusticum are used to unblock qi and blood, avoiding greasy stagnation caused by excessive tonification.

The core of the entire formula is "spleen and kidney regulation, and yin-yang replenishment," not only targeting the yin-yang deficiency of the kidneys but also considering the transportation function of the spleen and stomach, allowing for nourishment to be absorbed and retained, leading to more comprehensive recovery of the body.

【Real Case】

Mr. Zhang, 46 years old, has been working hard for a long time. In the past year, he has always felt "blockage in the upper and lower body": the upper body often suffers from dry mouth and tongue, restlessness, and insomnia, while the lower body experiences soreness and coldness in the waist and legs, frequent nighttime urination, and a significant decline in function. After the Chinese medicine practitioner diagnosed it as a typical case of "spleen and kidney deficiency, and yin-yang imbalance," the modified formula was used for about a month of treatment. The symptoms of feeling cold and heat were alleviated, sleep and physical strength significantly improved, and the issues of lower back soreness and functional problems also showed improvement.

It should be noted that Chinese medicine emphasizes individualized treatment. Although this formula is balanced, it is still recommended to use it under the guidance of a doctor, especially for those with obvious damp-heat, excess-heat, or yin deficiency with fire excess, who should not take it blindly.
