Introduction: Today, we will study Mr. Yao Ziyang's effective phlegm-expelling formula — Pediatric Phlegm-Clearing Powder.

Formula Ingredients: Calcined Chlorite 5g, Alum 3g, Carbonized Gleditsia Sinensis 3g, Borax 5g, Arisaema 2g, Pumice 3g, Rhubarb 3g, Areca Nut 3g, Tabasheer 5g, Borneol 2g

Administration: Grind the above ingredients into fine powder. For children aged 1–2 years, administer 3g per dose; for those aged 3–4 years, administer 3–4g per dose, twice daily. After administration, the child may either vomit sticky phlegm or pass loose, sticky stools, with rapid efficacy.

Indications: Pediatric phlegm wheezing syndrome, characterized by profuse phlegm and saliva in the throat that is difficult to expectorate or swallow, persistent coughing and wheezing, and absence of elevated body temperature.

This formula is highly effective in treating pediatric asthma with excessive phlegm, achieving consistent results with repeated use.

Zhang Jingyue stated, "There is a latent root that flares up upon exposure to cold or fatigue." Master Yao believes that this "latent root" refers to longstanding phlegm lodged internally.

Old phlegm and retained fluid lie hidden in the chest and diaphragm. Once external pathogens are contracted, they stir the phlegm and fluid, leading to mutual induction between internal and external factors, obstruction of the airway, failure of the lung to disperse and descend, resulting in wheezing and rebellious upward qi, with phlegm congestion making expectoration difficult.

In the formula, chlorite stone descends qi and expels phlegm, excelling at removing old, stagnant, and hidden phlegm. Gleditsia sinensis, with its pungent dispersing and drying nature, breaks up phlegm and guides stagnation, unblocking the qi of the lung and large intestine, making it particularly suitable for stubborn, congealed phlegm.

Borax clears heat and dissolves phlegm, while pumice, alum, and tabasheer clear the lung, dry dampness, and break up phlegm, serving as essential herbs for treating exuberant phlegm-heat.

Arisaema, with its pungent, warm, and drying nature, eliminates phlegm, disperses wind, and relieves spasms to calm wheezing. Borneol, with its fragrant and penetrating properties, disperses nodules and searches out pathogens, breaking up the congestion of phlegm-fire. The combination of rhubarb, chlorite stone, and gleditsia sinensis exerts a heavy, descending, and purging effect, guiding phlegm-fire downward and allowing hidden phlegm to exit through the intestines. Betel nut descends qi and guides stagnation, and its use promotes the movement of qi and the dissipation of phlegm.

In summary, this formula clears dryness, attacks and disperses, eliminates pathogens from both the upper and lower body, and yields rapid effects.

If after phlegm is eliminated and breathing is stabilized, continue with a small dose until bowel movements return to normal. Taking it continuously for several months, even if a cold occurs, wheezing and breathlessness no longer recur indicates recovery, and the medication can be discontinued.
