In Traditional Chinese Medicine, the back is considered part of the Yang aspect. The Du Mai (Governor Vessel) running down the center of the back is known as the Sea of Yang Qi, governing all the Yang meridians of the body. The adequacy of one's Yang Qi largely depends on the strength of this meridian. If you frequently feel chills in your back, experience limited mobility, find the cold sensation worsening with exposure to wind or chill, often have cold hands and feet, and are prone to catching colds or falling ill, it is likely due to insufficient Yang Qi.

Think of Yang Qi as the little sun within our bodies, responsible for warming the entire system and helping to ward off external cold. If even the Yang Qi in the "Sea of Yang Qi"—the Du Mai—is deficient, wouldn't the body naturally feel cold? Furthermore, Yang Qi serves to resist external pathogens; if Yang is deficient, the body's resistance will decline. Individuals with inherently insufficient Yang Qi have a weaker ability to fend off cold. When winter arrives, the limited Yang Qi inside simply cannot withstand the external cold, making them more susceptible to colds and experiencing overall chilliness.

Today, I’m going to share a simple little tip with everyone—using just two herbs: astragalus and codonopsis. Brew them in water and drink it to help replenish yang energy, boost your body’s immunity, and naturally improve that chilly feeling in your back once yang energy is sufficient.

First, let’s talk about astragalus. It has a slightly warm nature, can lift yang and correct prolapse, strengthen the spleen and tonify the middle, and benefit the defensive qi to consolidate the exterior. The spleen and stomach are the source of qi and blood production and can also generate yang energy. When yang energy is sufficient, immunity naturally follows suit.

Now, let’s look at codonopsis. It enters the lung and spleen meridians, can nourish blood and promote fluid production, and strengthen the spleen to benefit the lungs. Paired with astragalus, it helps to moderate astragalus’s fiery nature, allowing you to tonify yang energy without harming your body’s yin blood.

Use these two herbs, take an appropriate amount to brew in water, and drink it consistently for a while. Once yang energy in your body is sufficient, that chilly feeling in your back will lessen significantly, and your immunity will improve as well.
