If you suffer from frequent constipation—sometimes going three to five days without a bowel movement—and keep hoping it will happen tomorrow only to end up relying on Glycerin Enemas (Kaisailu) or other medications for relief, you may be developing a dependency. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes constipation is primarily related to these five conditions: first, gastrointestinal dysfunction; second, insufficient body fluids; third, stagnation of Qi and Blood; fourth, lack of exercise; and fifth, inadequate dietary fiber. Long-term accumulation of stool in the body not only produces toxins and triggers intestinal dysfunction but can also lead to hematochezia (bloody stools), hemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, and even rectal cancer. For managing stubborn constipation, there is a simple TCM remedy consisting of three herbs: Sennae Folium (Senna Leaf), Cistanches Herba (Rou Cong Rong), and Angelicae Sinensis Radix (Dang Gui). Sennae Folium is sweet in flavor and enters the Large Intestine meridian; it can both promote bowel movements and purge heat. Cistanches Herba tonifies Kidney Yang and moistens the intestines to facilitate stool passage. Angelicae Sinensis Radix is cool in nature, nourishing and activating blood while lubricating the intestines. When used together, these three herbs clear toxins and supplement Qi, providing a dual-effect approach to ensure smooth bowel movements.
