The *Huangdi Neijing* (Inner Canon of the Yellow Emperor) states: "When upright qi is preserved within, pathogenic factors cannot interfere; where pathogens congregate, the qi must be deficient." This means that insufficient upright qi leads to a deficiency of both Yin and Yang. Today, I would like to share a formula from the *Shengji Zonglu* (Imperial Benevolence Record) called Dihuang Yinzi. It consists of 12 medicinal herbs, which can be roughly divided into three groups based on their functions.

The first group consists of herbs that assist Yang and generate essence, primarily including Fuzi (Aconite), Rougui (Cassia Bark), Bajitian (Morinda Root), and Roucongrong (Cistanche). These herbs can significantly tonify the Yang qi within the kidneys while simultaneously nourishing essence and blood, strengthening our tendons, bones, and muscles.

The second group of herbs for nourishing kidney yin primarily consists of Schisandra, Ophiopogon, Dendrobium, and Prepared Rehmannia. These herbs nourish kidney yin while simultaneously consolidating kidney essence to prevent it from leaking away.

The third group focuses on dual supplementation of yin and yang, as well as strengthening the spleen and nourishing the heart. This group mainly includes Cornus, Poria, Polygala, and Acorus. These herbs strengthen the spleen and stomach, ensuring a source for the transformation and production of qi and blood. At the same time, they nourish the heart, calm the spirit, and facilitate communication between the heart and kidneys to prevent insomnia caused by the lack of coordination between these two organs due to kidney deficiency.

The combination of all these herbs provides simultaneous supplementation of yin and yang and harmonizes both the spleen and kidneys, yielding excellent results in replenishing the essence and qi within the kidneys. The entire formula is suitable for individuals with both yin and yang deficiencies; however, because its properties are slightly warming, it is not suitable for those with internal "deficiency fire."

However, please note that the use of Traditional Chinese Medicine requires syndrome differentiation. If needed, please consult a professional physician for diagnosis, treatment, and conditioning in a timely manner.
