Palpitations by Day, Nightmares by Night: A Traditional Chinese Medicine Approach to Nourishing Heart Yin and Calming the Mind
If you frequently experience palpitations, shortness of breath, excessive dreaming at night, and tend to feel nervous or easily agitated, it is likely that there is an issue with your Heart. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) attributes this to a deficiency of Heart Yin. When Yin and blood are depleted, it leads to palpitations and shortness of breath. Furthermore, TCM teaches that "the Heart houses the Spirit." When Heart Yin is insufficient, the Spirit loses its nourishment, leading to an unsettled soul, which manifests as frequent dreaming, suspiciousness, and irritability. In such cases, it is necessary to nourish Heart Yin and stabilize the mind. I would like to share a formula with you: Zengye Decoction.
This formula consists of Scrophularia (Xuan Shen), Ophiopogon (Mai Dong), and Rehmannia (Sheng Di Huang). Among them, Scrophularia is bitter and cold in nature; as a bitter-cold herb, it can nourish Yin and moisten dryness, thereby clearing irritability and heat from the Heart. Rehmannia has the effect of nourishing Yin and generating fluids, which can supplement the Heart and Kidneys, enrich Yin, and clear Heart heat. Ophiopogon is a sweet and cold herb that enters the Heart meridian to nourish Heart Yin and clear restlessness. Overall, these three herbs all possess the ability to nourish Yin, generate fluids, and moisten dryness. They replenish Heart Yin and stabilize the Spirit, improving daytime palpitations, emotional agitation, and the occurrence of excessive dreaming at night.
A reminder to everyone: Traditional Chinese Medicine requires syndrome differentiation. If needed, please consult a professional physician for timely diagnosis, treatment, and conditioning.
